I made an automatic chicken coop door for my pets to use. It allows me to sleep, and lets them out of the shed before dawn! It was extremely simple and easy to build! All the parts can be found in your garage or local hardware store. Explanation: Each timer has power from the electrical box that is plugged into the household power or inverter from a solar setup. The timer outlets are plugged into the two micro switches, one set at maximum open and the other at maximum close. These switches are under the large pulley, attached to the plywood frame 180 degrees apart. One sheet metal spring like lever is attached under the large pulley so that it can trip each micro switch. The micro switches are wired in between the timers and motor. When a timer is activated, the motor starts and the pulley moves until it trips the micro switch plugged into that timer. The timers only have 15 min on and off cycles, so I had to use the micro switch to kill the circuit to the motor and keep the door open or closed. You have to use 2 timers so that one circuit always has power to move the pulley and release the other micro switch. Materials: Scrap wood-plywood, misc screws, 2-light timers, 2-2prong extension cord ends, 1-3 hole extension cord end, 1 electrical connection box, 2 electrical outlets, about 3 foot of #14 house wire, a hand full of wire nuts, 2 micro switches ( found in junk appliances), 2 small-angle brackets, 4-female tab electrical connectors, 1-grill rotisserie motor with …

I have already built their coop at my parents house where they have better facilities for that kind of thing. This video is a time laps of when I got all the bits home and assembled them. It covers about 2 hours. At the end it is not completely finished. I have since added the metal mesh to keep the chickens in, but you get an idea of the structure. It is a 2 level design which aims to maximise the ground floor space, giving the chickens the most grass to eat and walk on as possible by having the living area suspended above at a hight of about 60cm. you can find more details and a pic of the finished product on on my blog post about it. The Best Chicken Coop – The Reverse Wichita Cabin Coop – A chicken coop designed for 5-6 chickens. It features 3 nesting boxes and 2 roosting bars in the main shelter, along with a chicken door that can be opened-closed from outside of the chicken coop. Outside of the main shelter is a small yard for the hens to scratch around in. Up until last weekend the chicks had been kept in a large plastic tub, which in turn was being kept in the bathtub. The chicks can not stay in my house forever, sooner or later they were going to have to go outside. On Sunday, March 18, 2012 the chicks moved into their new home. It took about 2 1/2 days, but with the help of my wife and my son, we got the coop built. Before construction of the coop started I probably spent 2 weeks thinking about the specs, how many laying boxes were needed, how large the coop needed to be, how it was going to be designed, square footage per chicken, types of lumber, how the chickens were going to access the coop, coop security,,, just lots of details were thought out. Some of the specs I decided on: The coop was going to be 4 feet deep by 6 feet wide. Treated lumber when possible Closeable trap door with a ladder At least 4 – 5 laying boxes Easy entry into the laying boxes for egg collection Laying boxes would be made out of 1×12 pine lumber Portable enough to move around the yard, or load on a trailer Designed for hot weather.
